Choice at referral is a centrepiece of the NHS reforms, designed to make the health service more responsive to patients.
From January 2006 all patients referred by their GP to a specialist will have the choice of at least 4 different hospitals.
To enable patients to choose between different hospitals, a booklet and practice leaflet will be supplied at the point of referral, if requested.
